California Craft

West Coast Modern & Frank Lloyd Wright

In the early 20th century, Southern California was a beacon for those escaping the cold and congested cities of the East and Midwest, seeking a healthy lifestyle filled with clean air, sun, and a fresh start amid natural beauty.

Wright coined the term “Romanza” to describe his residential buildings in California; for the romantic way each house blends in with its surroundings and makes the most of its setting, whether perched alongside a ravine in the middle of a jungle-like forest; sprawling across a wide plateau like a distinguished Mayan palace; or spilling along a hillside, overlooking the valley below. For his clients, he endeavored to create little pockets of Eden.

And in Pasadena, Charles and Henry Greene created their own unique style for the same goal, looking to Japan and the Arts and Crafts movement for inspiration: Using wide eaves and art glass to keep out the California sun, sleeping porches to take in the fresh air and clinker brick and natural boulders to tie the buildings to the land. Their grand bungalows, built with exquisite craftsmanship and fine furniture, are jewel boxes of style.

This 3-night, 4-day winter getaway to sunny southern California takes guests from Greene and Greene’s Craftsman bungalows and flower-filled gardens in Pasadena to Wright’s textile block creations in L.A. County. Enjoy curator-led tours, fresh California cuisine and exclusive tours of houses that are not open to the public. Highlights include a curator-led tour of Wright’s Hollyhock House, a special-access tour of Greene and Greene’s Gamble House, and a tour of the privately-owned Duncan-Irwin House. Also included is the influential Schindler House on King’s Road.
